Мы знакомы практически всю жизнь, мы познакомились с Винсентом, когда были детьми, хаха. Странно, да? Мы вместе росли, быстро сдружились и начали играть, когда еще были подростками. Мы жили в одном доме на задворках севера в Париже. В скучном пригороде было нечего делать, наша ежедневная жизнь была мрачной и грустной. Мы стали писать свою музыку и очень быстро подписались на какой-то инди-лейбл. Позже мы бросили учебу, чтобы сконцентрироваться на нашей музыке. Когда мы были подростками мы написали кучу странного, любительского материала, в основном это были демо-версии, наши исследования в музыке. Сейчас мы, безусловно, более профессиональны.

Мы слушали кучу материала, начиная от психоделики 70-х: Pink Floyd (Meddle , Dark of the Moon , Saucerful of Secrets ) до шуегейза с Cocteau Twins, Ride, Slowdive, от манчестерского пост-панка до мадчестера (Madchester) 90-х. Мы любим The Cure, David Bowie, Joy Division, New Order, Tindersticks, Happy Mondays, часть из раннего M83, Phoenix, Future Islands. Музыкальная сцена Великобритании действительно отличается от того, что происходит в мире. Электроника англичан сосредоточена на басу и ударных, больше чем где либо. С другой стороны, сцена нагружена говно-инди-роком. Британцы в принципе хорошие музыканты, но у французов более разнообразный подход. Мы миксуем все, все жанры и не паримся.

В общем мы начинаем создавать свои композиции и ремиксы с баса, пианино и драм-машины. Я играю на нескольких бас-гитарах и клавишных. Я обычно использую для сочинения Fender Bass VI. Часто бас-партии не слишком заметны в песне, но мне очень нравится, искать идеи для аранжировок, записывать по разному звук. Это хороший инструмент. Я играю на басу. Это мой первый инструмент. Fender VI бас с шестью струнами дает мне большие возможности. Я люблю его!

Мы записали эту песню на небольшом французском лейбле — у наших друзей. Изначально не было времени написать для них, но в итоге мы решили что это будет хороший опыт для нового стиля группы. Сейчас я пытаюсь петь своим натуральным голосом, тот что низкий. Когда я пою своим голосом, чувствую себя более комфортно и уверенно. Песня Save My Heart From The World — это первый шаг к нашим следующим композициям. Они будут более глубокие … Более угрюмые… Более смелые с привкусом диско. В общем холодный, меланхоличный диско-поп.

Технически мы пишем много песен, но релиз нового альбома, мы пока не будем анонсировать. У нас будет EP, без калькуляций. Мы устали от этого бизнес-давления. Мы хотим выпускать вещи органично. Новые песни будут абсолютно разными, очень современный материал — 85 ударов в минуту. Там будет тот тип песен, которые ты слушаешь по дорогое домой, когда тебе грустно и хочется скорее уже добраться. Песни в духе «Let’s Dance»: басовое диско, чилловые гитары, пэды. Ну и на EP, конечно же будут ремиксы.

Определенно с Робертом Смитом. Мы выросли на The Cure, Роберт фантастический вокалист. После релиза нашей версии на песню «Just Like Heaven», мы получили поздравления от Роберта в твиттере. Мы почувствовали себя на седьмом небе. Через несколько месяцев Роберт пригласил нас на их шоу в Лондоне, где мы встретились с кумирами после пати. Это высший пилотаж (cherry on the cake). Это же Роберт Смит!!! Теперь можно и умереть спокойно.

Три дня назад я бы тоже самое сказал Боуи! Все знают, что мы больше фанаты Боуи. Я знаю всю его карьеру и придерживаюсь его взглядов. Его ранняя смерть — это пытка. Мы почувствовали себя брошенными, просто пустота внутри. Мы плакали дома два дня. Никакой работы. Боуи — настоящий эталон, идеал артиста. Мы очень расстроены. Это конец эры. Сейчас печальная музыкальная ситуация, только маркетинг и ложь, о том, что ты крут. Музыканты преданные своему делу очень редки. Люди тратят свое время на преследование других на фейсбуке и это ужасно. Боуи великий. Он был очень резок, но каждый его сингл — это хит. Он писал сюрреалистичные тексты и пел страстно. Он был прекрасен. Он эталон.

Ремикс The Cure — «Just Like Heaven» был важным шагом для нас. Мы долго готовились и очень волновались перед тем как представить это The Cure, ибо ремикс был на наших кумиров. Но мы также гордимся и нашими другими ремиксами на Lana Del Rey, Pet Shop Boys, The Ting Tings, Lindstrom и Say Lou Lou… Скоро будет еще больше сюрпризов.

Я написал основную идею сценария. Я искал метафору для фразы «Время сиять». Я долгое время был тронут историями о длительном киднеппинге, Natascha Kampusch и др. Меня очень удручают истории тех девочек, которых похитили на несколько лет. История видео — это похищение. Существует Стокгольмский синдром, когда жертва влюбляется в своего похитителя, и у них закручиваются отношения. В итоге она все равно решает бежать и это ее «Time to Shine». К сожалению, весь наш продукт забрили. Портал Youtube удалил видео. Но мы планируем повторно выпустить видео как B-Side с обновленной видео-версией. Честно говоря все релизы этого видео были сделаны впустую из-за политики Youtube.

В основном нашей грустью…

Лучшее: встреча с Робертом Смитом, все проекты с Agnes B и ее командой, UK тур в поддержку Human League. Да, да они выбрали именно французскую группу. Ну и конечно лучшее, это наши новые песни. Худшее: опыт работы с Citizen Records.

Париж очень красивый город. Возможно даже самый красивый город в мире… огромный музей под открытым небом, прекрасная архитектура, вкусная еда, но мы предпочитаем жить в Лондоне, он более открытый и яркий. Париж слишком шикарный, с узким мышлением, лицемерный и консервативный для нас, хаха!

Дружелюбный, лояльный, трудоголик-алгоголик.

Мы любим французского дизайнера Agnès B. Она великий модельер, прекрасная леди и хороший человек. Мы очень любим ее! Агнес очень помогла нам в самом начале пути, она настоящий ценитель искусства и у нее потрясающая команда. Кроме этого, мы выступали в одежде еще нескольких дизайнеров, таких как JC De Castelbajac и Prada. Честно говоря это большая честь для нас. Я (Аксель) люблю Burberry и хотелось бы поработать с ними.

Если иметь в виду, дистиллированные спирта с зернами, крупы, фрукты, овощи, тогда ответ да! Всегда! Хаха! Если отсутствие сна, красное вино и сыр являются здоровыми, то тоже да! Хаха! Это доказательство того, что мы настоящие романтичные французские ребята! Хаха!

Конечно любим, особенно когда все получается спонтанно. Обычно лучшие вечеринки не запланированные и начинаются со слов: «Сегодня все будет спокойно»! В итоге получается ночь полная сюрпризов! Лондон идеально подходит для вечеринок, он разный и яркий. Мы веселимся с людьми из разных культур, с разными профессиями и жизненным стилем.

Если честно, то немного. DJ Vadim русский? В любом случае мы хотели бы узнать побольше о русской музыке.

Без понятия! Мы рассчитываем на вас, что вы покажете нам Москву, хаха! Надеемся что мы встретимся и вы нам что-то посоветуете. Однажды мы играли в Москве и Питере, это было реально весело! Очень хорошие воспоминания with crazy party animals (это невозможно перевести ,пусть каждый сам додумает)! Перелет из Москвы в Питер был очень страшным. Я честно был очень впечатлен Питером. Я большой почитатель Николая Гоголя. Как бы не звучало банально, но я хотел увидеть Невский проспект.

На самом деле ничего хорошего или положительного о религии я сказать не могу. Не обязательно быть верующим, чтобы разделять человеческие ценности: быть щедрым и поступать во благо. Большинство религий привели к ужасным войнам. Люди могут верить во все что они хотят, лично мы не можем верить в кого-то, с кем никогда не встречались. Мы атеисты.

Стоит прекратить думать, что другие люди хуже, ниже по положению или чем-то отличаются.

Знаете что? Я не должен так говорить… но в глубине души, мы пессимисты. Лицемерие, деньги, ненависть будут править миром. Достаточно нескольких движений, чтобы разрушить все то прекрасное, что мы создали. Посредственность всегда будет править этим печальным миром. Как сказал Леонардо Коэн: «Все начнет скатываться прочь, во все стороны».

The Penelopes interview (original)! English version

We almost know each other since day 1, we met when we were babies, haha. How strange is it ?! Growing up together, we became friends really quickly, and started to play music when we were teenagers. We were living in the same building, in a kind of abandoned area in the north of Paris. The proper boring suburb town with nothing to do. Our daily life was gloomy… kinda sad. At a point, we have decided to record our own songs. It was very rough. We have been signed by an indie record label quickly, so we stopped our studies to be completely devoted to our music. When we were younger, pretty much teenager, we have released a lot of strange & amateur material that were pretty much demos or research material. Now, we’re definitely more “professional”.

We listened to loads of stuffs: from the psychedelic 70ies with Pink Floyd (Meddle, Dark of the Moon, saucerful of Secrets ) to shoegaze with Cocteau Twins, Ride, Slowdive, from Manchester post punk to Madchester 90ies. We love bands/Artits as The Cure, David Bowie, Joy Division, New Order, Tindersticks, Happy Mondays and more recently M83, Phoenix, Future Islands. And obviously the discovery of the electronic music was an important step for us. Electronic music allows to reinvent Pop Songs. We want to make classic pop songs with a mix of classic instruments and powerful electronic tools. Mixing everything together is our leitmotiv. We were the 2 indie poppers in our council estate and our friend were listening to Disco / Hip Hop. At the time, we didn’t realize it would have an influence on our sound (especially in the idea of trying to groove).

The electronic UK music scene is really different from the scene of the “rest of the world”! Electronise wise, we reckon English are really focused on bass and drums. More than everywhere else… in the other hand, there is also shit load of indie rock bands… the brits are in general very good musician. As french guys, we have a very different and more crossover approach. We mix everything, all sort of influences. We don’t care.

In general, we start all our compositions & remixes by Bass & Piano and a old drum machine pattern. I (Axel) jam on several different basses & a piano. I recently use a lot the Fender Bass VI to compose. Often you don’t hear the instrument in the song/remixes but i like it a lot… just to search ideas… to note some ideas of arrangement… to record some placement. It’s a nice instrument. I play bass. This is my first instrument. The fender VI is basically a bass barytone with 6 strings so it changes my approach. I love it!

We have recorded this song this summer for a small french indie label that are friends with us. Initially, we thought we would not have the time to record the song for them but finally we realize the song would work well with the new orientation of the band. I (Axel) am currently trying to sing with my more natural voice which is a deep voice. I feel more comfortable in this natural range. «Save My Heart From The World» was a good way for us to confirm the directions of the forthcoming songs. They are gonna be deeper… more moody… more gritty… still kinda discoish. But a kind of cold melancholic disco pop.

Technically, we are writing a bunch of songs. I what could be an album… but we don’t want to announce an album… most likely, we re gonna release EP after EP without calculation. We’re a bit fed up with all this business pressure. We want to release things organically. As i told you, the new songs are quite different. The prod will be very modern but you’ll get a kind of 84/85 vibes. You know the type of songs you are listening on the motorway when you ere sad and when you get back home. I (Axel) am very into the type of “Let’s Dance” album/sound, bass disco, palm muted guitars, pads. All EP will be accompanied by some remixes.

Definitely Robert Smith. We grew up listening to The Cure, and he’s such a fantastic vocalist. After we released our version of “Just Like Heaven”, we received congratulations from Robert himself on twitter. We felt like… in heaven! A few months after Robert invited us to their London shows, and we met our idols during the after party. It was the cherry on the cake! So, it’s defo Robert Smith !! And we could die peacefully!

Three days ago, we would have also said Bowie. Everybody knows we are HUGE fans of Bowie. We have almost an autistic knowledge of his career. His very recent death has been a torture. We have the feeling to be abandoned. We are devastated… 2 days ago, we were together crying at home… unable to work… Bowie was a guide, a real Artist with an ideal. We’re very sad. It’s probably the end of an ERA. Now, everything is sadly only marketing & a “pretend to be cool” attitude… and musicians really devoted & dedicated are rare. People spend their time stalking people on Facebook. It’s terrible… Bowie was Grand. He was was edgy but he was writing songs that could be hit single. He was writing surreal lyrics and he was singing them with passion. He was quirky. He was a beautiful person! Again, he was a GUIDE.

Remixing The Cure «Just Like Heaven» has been an important step for us. We have been waiting so long to have a go with The Cure cause it s a big pressure to remix our idol. But we are also proud of our remixes for Lana Del Rey, Pet Shop Boys, the Ting Tings, Lindstrom and Say Lou Lou among other official remixes. More surprises to come.

I (Axel) wrote the main idea/the pitch. I wanted to have a metaphor around ‘Time to Shine”. I was very touched by the recent stories of long Kidnaping… Natacha Kampush etc. I find deeply depressing to think about the life of those girls who have been kidnaped for years. The story of the video is kinda raw… a young girl has been kidnapped for years… bad treatment etc. There is a kind of Stockholm syndrome… the relationship with the bad guy is twisted… and when she finally decide to escape. It’s her “Time to Shine”. Unfortunaly, the shooting & the production have been a mess… and Youtube has been very mean with us by removing the Video. So we plan to re-release the song at a point… as a B Side with a re-edited video. Cos to be honest, the all release of this video/song has been wasted by Youtube and this conservative policy.

Mainly our sadness.

Best Memories: meeting Robert Smith… all the projects with Agnes b and her team… some of the remixes… the Uk tour as supporting band for Human League (they have chosen a french band!!!)… the forthcoming songs.
Worst Memories: the whole french experience with Citizen Records.

Paris is a beautiful city. Maybe the most beautiful city in the world… a huge open sky museum… wondeful architecture, great food… But we prefer to live in London, which is a more open minded and vivid city. Paris is too posh, narrow minded, hypocrite & conservative for us haha!

Friends, loyal and work alcoholics!

We feel really closed to the French designer Agn?s B. She’s a great fashion designer obviously, but she’s also a wonderful lady, such a lovely people. We’re totally in love with her! She helped us a lot since the beginning of the band, she’s a true art lover and her team is terrific. We also played for several designers we’re fan of, including JC De Castelbajac and Prada. Honestly, it’s a great honor for us… Axel is a Burberry obsessive. He would love to collaborate with them.

If you admit that distilled alcohols with grains, cereals, fruits or plants are healthy, the answer is: yes, totally! Haha :- )! If sleep deprivation, red wine & cheese are healthy, then yes! Haha! Further evidence that we’re proper romantic french guys.

We like to party everywhere, especially when it’s unexpected! Usually the best parties we have are not planned, we re often starting like: “Well, tonight we take it easy”. And finally it’s an endless night, full of suprises! That’s the trick! London is perfect for having parties, it s so vast and vivid. People are mixed, it’s incredibly cosmopolitan. You have fun with people from different cultures, with different jobs, with different ways of life.

Not much to be honest. DJ Vadim is Russian we reckon ? Anyway, we would love to receive more music from Russia!

No idea! We count on you to guide us in Moscow, haha! And we trust people we will meet there to give us local tips. We went to play live once in Moscow and St Petersburg & It was good fun! It was a good memory, with crazy party animals!!! We remember the flight between Moscow & St Petersburg was scary!! I (Axel) remember having been very impressed by St Petersbourg. I am big fan of Nicolas Gogol! it’s cliche but i wanted to see the perspective Nevski etc.

Nothing really good or positive. You don t need to be religious to share human values, to be generous and to stand for the common good. Most of the religions have led to awful wars & fights. Obviously, people can believe in everything they want, but personally, we cannot be led by someone that no one has ever met. We’re deeply atheists.

By stopping thinking that other people are different or inferior.

You know what? We should not say that… but deep inside us, we are pessimistic. Hypocrisy, Money, Hate will rule the world. You only need a few dickheads to ruin all the beautiful efforts that we ‘ll make. The mediocrity will always win in this sad world. Believe Leonard Cohen: “Things are gonna slide …Slide in all directions”.
